Kidder Residence

Pittsburgh, PA

Residential Addition

Project Description

The Kidders contacted Tusick & Associates to discuss options for renovating their kitchen and expanding the first floor.  This one-story addition to the rear of the residence was designed to meld with the existing house.  The project was divided into two phases.  Phase 1 involved the addition of a Family room and Phase 2 dealt with the Kitchen renovation.

Care was taken to maximize the limited space of the kitchen into something that could be functional as a central node for keeping track of the children, as a work space, as a homework area, and of course food preparation.

The new family room was added to the rear of the kitchen and invites a lot of natural light into the house.  The box window expanded the room by several square feet without impacting the foundation, while the cathedral ceiling increases the volume.  This spacious room becomes the new casual family gathering space.
